Why only one SC Verl fan was in Zwickau

While some clubs are regularly accompanied by thousands of fans to away games, it was exactly one supporter at SC Verl who made the journey to Zwickau on Saturday. How it came about and who the faithful follower is.

“Response was overwhelming”

The photo of a Loser fan in the otherwise empty guest block of the Zwickau GGZ Arena went viral. That alone corresponding Facebook post von liga3-online.de was marked with “likes” more than 9,000 times by Tuesday morning. The lone fan is Carsten Ewers, who is now a minor celebrity. As the 42-year-old member of the “Hard Core” fan club told the “New Westphalian” reported that he had been showered with news since Saturday. “The feedback was overwhelming,” said Ewers, who “didn’t expect it in life”. “I actually assumed malice. But even in the stadium everyone was nice to me. I got a lot of feedback afterwards. Every single message was positive.” The reactions on social networks were also mostly positive, with many showing respect for the 42-year-old.

But how did it happen that Ewers was the only loser who covered the 390 kilometers each way and was therefore alone in the car for a total of around eight hours? “Actually, a fan bus was supposed to go to Zwickau. But it was canceled at short notice. I’ll be on my own then.” Also because he had to listen to jokes from other fan club members that he hadn’t gone to Munich two weeks earlier. “I really just wanted to show them,” says the Gütersloher. However, he was “a bit surprised that he was actually the only away driver. But I also wanted to roar my team forward on my own and give everything to support my team. I did that as best I could”.

SCV plans surprise

It wasn’t enough to score points (1:2), but SC Verl still wants to reward its loyal supporters after the team thanked Ewers immediately after the game at the fence: “We’d love to have away points in the game against FSV Zwickau picked up and celebrated with YOU. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out. We’ve thought of something and will surprise you with it in the next few days,” wrote the club on Instagram. Because: “We as Sportclub Verl have a very special relationship with our fans. Carsten ‘Tino’ Ewers and many many others have been supporting the club for many years. The fan groups help when things have to be tackled.” It is an “extraordinary partnership” between fans and club that is “anything but natural”.

Exactly what the surprise looks like is still a secret. However, Ewers emphasizes that his support is unconditional and that he will be back in the SC Verl fan block without any surprise from the club – if necessary, alone again. Next Tuesday we go to Meppen. Incidentally, the SCV is accompanied by an average of 75 fans to away games this season, which means the penultimate place in the league comparison. Only SC Freiburg II has fewer away drivers (30). The highest value was set in November in Osnabrück (210), the lowest value with only Carsten Ewers in the block now in Zwickau.
