Why iPhones in the Netherlands are more expensive than in the US

Apple has the new iPhone 12‘s announced. During the presentation, the company showed, as always, only US prices. The Dutch prices subsequently turned out a lot higher.

Take the new one iPhone 12 mini. This handset was presented as available starting at $ 699. In the Netherlands, the device is available from 809 euros (converted that would amount to 950 dollars). That’s a big difference. What is going on?

VAT and duties

In Dutch stores we are used to prices being presented including VAT. That is not the case in the United States. Not even in the American Apple Store. There the ‘sales tax’ of between 4 and 10 percent is omitted.

Then it is not as simple as converting the currency. Apple provides an extra buffer in order not to be surprised by fluctuations in exchange rates.

In addition, we have to pay various levies in the Netherlands when you buy a product, such as the home copy levy.

Discount with ads

New this year in the US is the new iPhones with discount are offered when users enable ads from their provider. Without this discount, the new iPhone 12 mini in America costs $ 729 and not $ 699.
