Why does the Wimbledon champion suffer? Forearm pain is caused by clay

Sport.cz

During Thursday, you visited Professor Kolář due to an injury to your left forearm, due to which you missed a match between the fedcup teams of the Czech Republic and Slovakia within the Friendship Cup in Bratislava over the weekend. Will you reveal the diagnosis?

It turned out well. There is nothing serious that would jeopardize my immediate and longer-term plans. The professor released my hand and I heard that it would be necessary to take much more care of my hand during physiotherapy. However, I can attend the exhibition tennis tournaments in Berlin, which are scheduled for July 13 and 17.

You already had a problem at the beginning of spring during training during the coronavirus break. In May, you won the O Cup of the President of the Czech Tennis Association tournament on a hard surface, but after returning to clay, the pain returned. What causes it?

In fact, it is caused by the clay surface. I had a similar problem at the French Open last year. At that time, I took time off after the matches, I worked a lot with a physiotherapist, but then my hand was still shattering. As I try to lift the blows more on the clay, which is not usual for my game, the muscles in my forearm stiffen. This is the source of all the trouble.

Leaving aside the smaller tournaments, does that mean that your participation in the French Open is in jeopardy in the future due to the given problems?

It is a fact that I will try to omit clay from the program in the future. The balls have a wild reflection, they jump everywhere possible, which is also an important factor. In addition, the hand has played many balls in tournaments for many years, which is also evident. But if Roland Garros plays, this year or in the future, I will definitely go. In addition to the need for more hand care, it is also necessary to realize that in the 100% season, the preparation looks a little different. However, Professor Kolář also said that I could play on the grass and hard surfaces without any worries.

Just the first of the exhibition tournaments in Germany is played on your favorite grass.

At least I’ll play something on the grass this year …

Currently, your favorite Wimbledon would culminate. Didn’t you get nostalgic when you realized that?

Not exactly. I was rather nostalgic when the cancellation of this year was announced. But I take everything for granted, there are more important things than sports. I remembered the All England Club as part of a campaign I shot for them and made strawberries with cream at home, which is one of the symbols of the tournament. And I also got clothes for Wimbledon. But I will use it at least in the Berlin exhibition.

While question marks hover over Roland Garros in September, organizers of the US Open have announced that the tournament will take place on their courts for the first fortnight, albeit without spectators. In the current situation, when there are reports of thousands of people infected from the USA every day, how do you perceive the organization of a tournament?

Honestly, I don’t follow much news. So far, all indications are that the US Open will indeed be. If the elite players fly there and take the action with all seriousness, I will fly as well. However, the conditions will be difficult. And I just hope that no one would be positive in the tournament, because it would be a disaster for everyone.

On the contrary, you are sure about events in China, which has announced that it will not hold any sporting events until the end of the year, so large tennis tournaments and the Champions Tournament will not take place this year.

This is not good news for the WTA. It will be a big blow. But it must be admitted that China is generally demanding, more complex. It’s a different world. The girls will probably be more happy about it.

Djokovic will not start the season in Washington, with the US Open still hesitant

Do you receive information from the WTA about tournaments, their postponements and developments?

We get it. Everything is sent to me by a manager from America. And it’s so long you can’t even read it. I have a lot of information.

During a very non-traditional season, you took a fundamental step and changed the agency that represents you in the Czech Republic. After fifteen years of cooperation with the Czech Sports Miroslav Černošek, you have signed a contract with the Sport Institute agency, which was established at tennis Sparta. What led you to the imaginary transition?

I’ve been in Prague for a while. And in fact, certain steps stemmed from it. I train at Sparta, which is why I decided to change. I thank Mr. Černošek for his years of cooperation and I believe that the new stage will be great in this respect.
