Why Did People Look Older in the Past? Exploring the Factors that Influence Aging

Often, looking through old family photo albums or watching black-and-white movies, we catch ourselves thinking that the people in these shots look much older than their modern peers.

Why is it so – says in the material of the portal IFL Science.

Blogger Michael Stevens, the leading educational Youtube channel Vsauce, tried to understand the issue. He found a whole list of factors that could influence this process.

The blogger argues that the rate of human aging has indeed changed over the past 100 years due to rising general levels of wealth, improved healthcare and lifestyle choices. Of course, they are not the same in different parts of the world and between people with different incomes and jobs. But the general trend can be traced quite clearly.

This topic was also studied by a team of researchers who published the results of their work in 2018. They analyzed changes associated with biological aging, such as blood pressure and lung function, as a function of chronological age between 1988 and 2010.

It turned out that even on this rather short interval, the differences were significant. Those born later aged more slowly than their predecessors at the same age.

“Over the past 20 years, the biological age of the US population appears to have decreased for men and women across the entire age range,” the authors noted.

However, they clarified that the degree of change was not the same for men and women or by age. Thus, in young men, the slowdown in aging occurred at a more noticeable pace compared to young women.

Cursor wrote earlier that a group of psychologists at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology in the US found that reading preserves memory skills in older adults.

We also wrote that eating more flavonols, the antioxidants found in wine, tea, and many vegetables and fruits, can slow down the rate of memory loss.
