Former player of FC Nantes, Batista Mendy now flourishes on the side of Angers. An important new cog in Gérald Baticle’s system, he is one of the few this season who seems to be floating in a struggling workforce. At the microphone of France 3, the solid number 2 delivered some confidences on his departure from FC Nantes.
In a context where the most experienced players of Angers SCO see their contract expire this year in June, the emergence of players like Batista Mendy has something to reassure observers and supporters. Substitute, rotation player, and now holder, Mendy has lived through all the important stages at Raymond Kopa and in the SCO jersey. Formerly Canary, the player made a brave decision to leave the clubbut he has no regrets.
Kombouaré at the source of his departure?
As a young player, Batista Mendy was mainly a substitute on the side of Nantes. With Antoine Kombouaré in charge, the midfielder did not feel unfailing confidence, and doubted the real intentions of his coach to believe his words. He tells : “In Nantes, I saw that I had no playing time with the pros. When I spoke with coach Kombouaré, he told me that he was counting on me. But this sentence, I have heard it too many times. I wanted playing time. In Angers, the coach called me, he showed me his interest. I gone ahead. »
Words that will delight the Angevin supporters, now delighted to see him evolve as a sentry in a midfield three in front of the defense. Also capable of turning into a central defender, his large size (1m91) allows him to weigh on the opposing offensives. At only 22 years old, its room for improvement is still significantand it could become an important longer-term element for the SCO, as a major cleaning is being prepared this summer.
