Why Child Immunizations are Important: Expert Advice from Dr. Raihan Sp.A

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — A pediatric infection and tropical disease consultant Dr. dr Raihan Sp.A said that children over the age of one year must complete immunization reinforcement or immunization booster so as not to get infected with infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, polio, diphtheria to tetanus or rubella.

“One year old children’s immunizations must be complete. There are immunizations booster, booster, which after a year should also be supplemented. If, for example, it’s too late, it must still be done,” Raihan said in an online discussion on immunization this week.

The doctor from the Zainoel Abidin Hospital in Banda Aceh said that in a group of children who are not sick but are not immunized, in a short time these children will catch the disease because they do not have immunity. He warned that the increasing number of incidents could become an epidemic.

Raihan said one of the infectious diseases that stalks children is tuberculosis or tuberculosis. Tuberculosis does not only occur in coughs, it can even attack other organs such as the joints or spine. Transmission also often occurs in the home from adults to children, so children need to be protected by BCG immunization.

“So we don’t just think that children are a threat outside the home, even the closest people they love in the house can be a source of disease transmission to children, so children need to be protected with immunizations, which we call immunizations,” said Raihan.

Apart from that, TB can also occur in the intestines which causes the intestines to become sticky and can leak. A more severe complication is that TB can attack the lining of the brain and make children experience a decline in intelligence and cannot return to normal.

In addition to tuberculosis, hepatitis B is also a concern, especially in newborns. Because children infected with hepatitis B will experience liver cancer 10 to 20 years later.

“Because there are so many deaths and 80-99 percent have no symptoms. This is why there is a program in the first 24 hours after birth to be given hepatitis B,” said the doctor who is studying his doctorate at Padjadjaran University in Bandung, West Java.

In addition, other infectious diseases that can infect children who do not carry out immunizations, such as polio transmission which occurs because the polio virus enters the child’s body through contaminated food or water, causing paralysis. There are also diphtheria, measles with serious complications to rubella and tetanus which can cause broken bones or fractures.

Raihan said that many parents did not comply child immunization and are not aware of these dangerous diseases so that when carrying out treatment they are in a severe condition. “Parents usually only realize when they see their child must be treated for days. The effect of fever due to immunization in children is not comparable if the child is not immunized and then gets sick,” said Raihan.

He also reminded that immunization is an investment in the future of children. Completing immunization according to the schedule and number of doses given can provide optimal immunity to children so that children and families are protected.
