Why Biden does not seek Putin’s military defeat (for now) – Corriere.it

Of Giuseppe Sarcina

The Americans remain opposed to delivering the jets he has been asking for for some time to Zelensky. And the president is not pursuing Russian military defeat anytime soon

The Wednesday 6 April it helped disprove at least two fairly widespread ideas about Joe Biden’s strategy towards Ukraine. The first point concerns weapons. State Secretary Antony Blinken in Brussels confirmed what had emerged at the NATO summit in Brussels on 24 March last. The key phrase: Ukrainians have the necessary tools to counter the Russian occupation. Not only that, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby argues that Kiev will be able to win the war. In practice, it means that the Bucha massacres did not change Biden’s opinion.

The Americans remain c
ontrari to deliver the jets that Zelensky has been asking for a month now. The White House resists pressure from Eastern Europe and, on the domestic level, also the pressures coming from Congress, on a bipartisan basis. Democrats and Republicans alike unleashed. Then here are the penalties. Doubts about their effectiveness are multiplying in the United States and elsewhere, at least in the short term. But Biden is convinced that we must proceed step by step, rejecting, once again, the requests of Zelensky and the American Congress.

the restrictive measures adopted yesterday, in fact, they reinforce the scheme already in place. Banks and some Russian companies are affected. The ban on direct investments in Russia is triggered, but the commercial channels remain open. The Americans have banned the import of oil, but they have not touched the gas either. A conclusion can be drawn from these two premises, albeit provisional given the tumultuous developments of the war. Biden has no plans to sink the blow against Putin, is not pursuing its immediate military defeat. Instead, he is preparing for a long-term confrontation, hoping to wear down the Russian leader on the military and then on the economic level, in order to force him to negotiate. The American president, rightly or wrongly, considers that the risk of a direct involvement of the United States or NATO. Furthermore, the Pentagon does not rule out that Putin could use chemical weapons.
