Why Are Madonna’s Fans Telling Her to “Grow Up” Despite Having Nothing to Prove?

If Madonna has nothing to prove to anyone, why are her fans telling her to “grow up”?

There is no denying it: it is highly unlikely that a star masculine 65 year old of Madonna’s caliber being told to grow up or what to do. Her maturity or behavior would not be up for debate as, unfortunately, hers is.

It’s not even the first time Madonna has faced scrutiny of her performances in relation to her age. After her appearance at the 2023 Grammys, many took to the Internet to share unsolicited opinions: “Madonna is fine for her age… If her age is that of a 2,700-year-old vampire who eats babies and small animals alive” , read one comment.

A Madonna fan then replied: “These kinds of negative comments are so predictable! Most of them come from people who are afraid of getting old and being insignificant.”

The singer has been receiving these comments about her age for too long, like many women inside (and outside) the public eye, over 40, over 50, over 60 or over. Back in 2016, she attacked a critic precisely for giving his opinion on what was appropriate “for her age.”

“It’s MY age and it’s MY life, and all of you who hate women need to sit down and try to understand why you feel the need to limit me with your fear of what you don’t know.”

Madonna has been receiving comments about her age for too long, as have many women in (and out of) the public eye, over 40 years old.

“The fact that people believe that a woman should not express her sexuality after a certain age is proof that we continue to live in a sexist and discriminatory society,” she posted on Instagram.

In a 2021 interview, Madonna said she didn’t think about age when she performed: “I don’t even think about my age, really. Even when I survived my tour in agony, with no cartilage in my right hip and everyone telling me : ‘You have to stop, you have to stop’, I said: ‘I’m not going to stop. I’ll continue until I can’t anymore.'”

Infantilizing Madonna like this by telling her to act more like other women her age seems misogynistic to me.
