WHO, together with the United States Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Assistance (PEPFAR) and Ukrainian authorities and other partners, have purchased 209,000 packages of generic TLD antiretroviral drugs.

Ukraine has about 260,000 people living with HIV, the second most in Europe after Russia.

Prior to the Moscow invasion of Ukraine, about half of people living with HIV in Ukraine were on antiretroviral treatment.

In March, the United Nations agency on HIV/AIDS warned that Ukraine had less than a month in stock of drugs for HIV patients.

“This war has the potential to undermine the hard-won progress of recent years on a number of health issues, including the case of HIV. We cannot allow that to happen when Ukraine begins to address the HIV problem,” said WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Henri P. Kluge .

Although there is no specific cure for HIV, antiretroviral drugs can control the virus and prevent transmission of the virus through sexual contact with other people.
