WHO: very high risk of worldwide coronavirus spread

At least 83,000 people worldwide have been infected so far. More than 2800 died from the consequences. More and more countries, including the Netherlands in the meantime, report cases of infection.

However, a pandemic is not in line with expectations. In that case, the entire world population could actually come into contact with the virus, and it doesn’t seem like that for the time being.

Aggressive approach

The virus must therefore be tackled ‘aggressively’, says the organization. “The approach in China has shown that this virus can be contained.”

Locked

In China, entire millions of cities have been cut off from the outside world and many tens of thousands of people have been placed in quarantine.

According to the WHO, such measures are currently the only effective method, but many countries are absolutely incapable of taking such decisive action, the organization believes.

Extremely proactive monitoring

“Fundamental to a good approach is extremely proactive monitoring to immediately detect new cases,” the WHO writes in a report. “The diagnosis must then be made very quickly, all contacts must be checked and also placed in quarantine. And that is only possible with a high degree of acceptance by the population.”
