The World Health Organization has warned that the coronavirus variant Omicron represents “very high” global risk – On the one hand, there is evidence that vaccines cannot provide full protection against it, on the other hand, there is still little data on how dangerous this option is, Reuters reported.
According to the WHO, the overall risk of Omicron remains very high for a number of reasons. According to the information available at the moment, the sick and vaccinated they do not have enough antibodies to protect against infection with the new variant of the virus – this can lead to a high rate of its spread and to “severe consequences“.

For now remains unclear whether by nature Omicron is more contagious from the dominant Delta variant.
The WHO assessment is confirmed by Oxford University study, published on Monday, December 13th. Laboratory tests have shown that two doses of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines against COVID-19 do not produce enough neutralizing antibodies against Omicron. At the same time, there is hope that manufactured T cells can at least to prevent severe leakage of the disease.
Oxford scientists note that for now there is no evidence that Omicron causes a more severe course of the disease.
