WHO Lifts Highest Alert Level for COVID-19 Pandemic after Three Years

The head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced today in Geneva that the highest alert level has been lifted. It was valid for three years.

The WHO announcement has no direct impact, as each country decides for itself what protective measures are implemented.

Tedros emphasized that the coronavirus has not been defeated and continues to spread around the world, it is dangerous and new dangerous strains can develop at any time.

However, the WHO followed the advice of a committee of independent experts and lifted the highest alert level because it is confident that good tools are now available to protect people from this virus.

When the UN health agency first declared the coronavirus an international crisis on January 30, 2020, it had not yet been named COVID-19, and there were no major outbreaks outside of China.

In three years, at least seven million people have died in the Covid-19 pandemic.
