The WHO secretary-general of the World Health Organization recriticized the stocking of COVID-19 vaccines in wealthy countries.
At the 148th WHO Board of Directors, Thewardros Adhanom Governor Yeosus, who opened on the 18th local time, said that 49 wealthy countries have been vaccinated at 39 million doses so far. He said, “I received only 25 servings, not 5 million servings or 25,000 servings.”
He pointed out that 44 deals were signed between vaccine pharmaceutical companies and rich countries last year, and at least 12 this year. “Complicating the situation is that most manufacturers prioritize approval from rich country regulators.”
“The world is on the verge of a devastating moral failure,” he said. “The price of this failure will be the lives and livelihoods of those living in the poorest countries.”
In particular, he stressed that the spread of the COVID-19 mutant virus has made the fair distribution of vaccines more important.
