WHO Announces Two New Death Cases of Monkeypox

Jakarta

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced two new deaths from monkeypox. This is a new addition since June 27, bringing the total fatal cases in 2022 to three.

WHO recently held an emergency meeting with experts, amid monkeypox cases that soared to 77 percent. Now the total has reached 6,027 cases.

“Most of them were reported in the European region. However, all three deaths were recorded in Africa,” said the WHO report, quoted Thursday (7/7/2022).

According to WHO, monkeypox cases are male-dominated, with more than 99 percent of cases being male.

“This outbreak continues to affect men who have sex with men who have reported recent sex with one or more male partners, suggesting there is no signal of sustained transmission outside this cohort for now,” he said.

The United Nations agency in Geneva said it would again discuss whether monkeypox would be raised to the WHO’s highest level of alert, a global health emergency. The meeting is scheduled for July 18 or earlier, said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Tedros will also meet Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Thursday morning, a WHO spokesman said, but there were no details on the meeting. “Spain has reported 802 cases so far,” according to WHO data.
