White roses at a demonstration following the death of Bas van Wijk

“We know why we are here. We are angry and sad. We feel helpless,” said Myra, who was on stage with her two daughters. There was a minute of silence against senseless violence, there was music and there was talk. Towards the end of the demonstration, visitors were able to bring a bunch of roses, writes AT5.

Silent march

24-year-old Van Wijk was shot dead on a beach in De Oeverlanden park in Amsterdam on Saturday. He would have approached someone who wanted to steal an expensive watch from a friend. One of the four suspects detained in this case, has confessed that he was the shooter.

On Twitter under #GrechtigheidVoorBas, there is a lot of response to the death of the 24-year-old. According to some Twitterers, there is much less (political) attention for this than for the death of the black American George Floyd, who was killed by police brutality.

On Friday evening in Badhoevedorp, the place where Van Wijk grew up, a silent march walked. During that trip Van Wijk was commemorated by friends and family.
