White discharge that is more watery or ‘watery’ may occur during pregnancy. This white liquid is often considered vaginal discharge, Mother. So is this really normal vaginal discharge?

Reproductive endocrinologist and fertility specialist from Colorado, Eric Surrey, MD, says that white discharge is normal during pregnancy. Usually, it becomes more severe as the gestational age progresses.

“In fact, heavy discharge towards the end of the third trimester can indicate that the body is preparing to give birth,” says Surrey. What to Expect.

Causes of white discharge during pregnancy

White discharge during pregnancy can be caused by several reasons. According to various sources, the following are the reasons:

1. Hormonal factors

Hormonal factors are one of the causes of watery white discharge during pregnancy. The hormone that plays an important role in this is estrogen.

During pregnancy, high levels of the hormone estrogen can cause more blood to flow to the pelvic area. This increased blood flow can stimulate the mucous membranes, which in turn can produce a clear, white discharge from the vagina.

2. Whiteness

Your body will respond to the changes that occur during pregnancy. One of these responses is occurrence leukorrhea or discharge.

“Discharge is the body’s way of cleaning dead cells from the birth canal to increase the optimal number of bacteria and prevent infection. Basically, this can protect mother and baby,” said Surrey.

Leucorrhoea is considered as one of the early symptoms of pregnancy. The vaginal discharge has a thin consistency, is clear, watery, and has no odor.

3. Amniotic fluid rupture

Clear liquid doesn’t always mean vaginal discharge, Mother. This could just be ruptured amniotic fluid.

Amniotic fluid is different from the liquid that comes out when vaginal discharge. Amniotic fluid is more watery and colored like urine (slightly yellowish) and does not have the consistency of mucus. Usually, ruptured amniotic fluid will drip continuously.

The liquid that comes out needs to be watched out for if it is greenish in color and in large quantities. This can be risky for the fetus because it indicates that the amniotic fluid has mixed with meconium (baby’s feces).
