It has already been reported that this year the results of students in the centralized examinations have not changed significantly compared to last year, however, the performance of students in the compulsory examinations is a few percentage points higher than in previous years, VISC said.

Compared to last year, the average performance of students has improved by eight percentage points in the centralized exam in English, reaching 70%. In English, this is the highest result since 2009. The results have also increased in French, where the highest figure has been reached since 2009. In 2019, the average performance of students in the French language exam was 69%, however, this year the average results of students reached 75%.

The average results have also improved by three percentage points in German, where the average result of students has increased to 74%, which is the highest average performance since 2009.

It should be noted that this year the improvement in the results is also observed in the mathematics exam. The average score of students in the centralized exam in mathematics last year continued to fall, reaching the lowest level in the last decade. This year, the average result has risen by three percentage points to 35%.

At the same time, the center emphasized that comparing the results of the examinations over the years should take into account that the Covid-19 pandemic had partly changed the content of the exam, the students completed the exams on special answer sheets that had not been available in previous years.

A more detailed statistical analysis of exam results will be available in September this year.

The VISC noted that today 18,800 centralized examination certificates were issued to education authorities for young people who took centralized examinations for general secondary education in the basic term. This year, in order to receive a certificate of secondary education, students had to take an exam in Latvian, mathematics and, optionally, one foreign language.

On average, 14,000 students took the compulsory exams. 14,064 students took the exam in Latvian, 14,383 in mathematics, 12,340 students had chosen to take English, 1,784 in Russian, 37 in German and six in French.

The replacement of foreign language exams with a test organized by an international testing institution was used by 274 learners. VISC reminded that this year the students did not have to take the elective exams, however, there are no significant changes in the number of elective centralized examiners. In the history of Latvia and the world, 4192 students passed the exam, in biology – 1125, in physics – 898, while in chemistry – 548.
