Which excursions are allowed on Ascension Day despite Corona? An overview

Going out with the handcart and friends – for many this has been a tradition for many years on Ascension Day. But on the second Father’s Day in the pandemic, this is not really to be thought of. Despite the corona pandemic, smaller and larger excursions are possible – and allowed.

However, some people might be confused about which rules currently apply. Because these differ not only in the federal states, but even between districts.

The federal emergency brake still applies to 217 urban and rural districts

The situation is clearly regulated in the 217 urban and rural districts with a seven-day incidence of over 100. The federal emergency brake applies there. Even outdoors, meetings are only permitted with a maximum of one person outside the household. Excluded from the contact regulation are children under 14 years of age, people who have been fully vaccinated against Corona and those who have survived a Covid infection. Most leisure facilities remain closed, only zoos and botanical gardens are allowed to open with a hygiene concept. A negative corona test must be presented to gain access. With the federal emergency brake, there is also a nightly curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

On the other hand, the situation is different in the 184 urban and rural districts in which the incidence is below 100. Here the respective government makes the rules, insofar as the uniform state ordinance does not apply. Day trips are allowed almost everywhere, only Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania only allows guests from its own federal state. In some areas, such as Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein, beer gardens and outdoor restaurants are already open again.

The Corona regulations on Ascension Day in the federal states

Baden-Wuerttemberg: Most urban and rural districts in Baden-Württemberg have an incidence of over 100. Only the urban districts of Heidelberg and Freiburg im Breisgau and the districts of Main-Tauber-Kreis, Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Emmendingen, Konstanz and Lörrach have been lower for several days. A maximum of five people from two households are allowed to meet here. The outdoor catering is currently not open anywhere in Baden-Württemberg, this should not be possible until Friday at the earliest. Zoos and parks, on the other hand, are open with a hygiene concept.

Bayern: In Bavaria, different rules apply depending on the incidence of the city or district. Beer gardens and outdoor catering are open again in a total of 15 regions, including the cities of Munich, Passau, Bamberg, Schwabach, Weiden in the Upper Palatinate and Erlangen as well as the districts of Landsberg am Lech, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Starnberg, Tirschenreuth, Neustadt an der Waldnaab, Amberg- Sulzbach, Kitzingen, Lindau and Würzburg. In the former Corona hotspot Passau, further easing applies, as the incidence here is stable below 35. Ten people from three households are allowed to meet there outdoors, and theaters, cinemas and museums are also allowed to open.

Berlin: In Berlin, the federal emergency brake applies at least until next Tuesday.

Brandenburg: In Brandenburg, the federal emergency brake does not apply in all urban and rural districts, but severe restrictions still apply almost everywhere. Outdoor restaurants, amusement parks and other facilities are not allowed to reopen until May 21 at the earliest – and only if the incidence is stable below 100. Long-term campers are again allowed in regions with a stable incidence below 100, currently the Dahme-Spreewald-Kreis, Barnim, Märkisch-Oberland, Oberhavel, Ostprignitz-Ruppin, Potsdam-Mittelmark and Teltow-Fläming. In these districts, meetings of two households with a maximum of five people are allowed, and a maximum of ten people are allowed to meet outdoors for contactless sports. For children under 14, the person limit is 20. Museums, planetariums and animal parks are also allowed to open in these areas.

Bremen: The federal emergency brake is currently still in force in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Only from Monday could there be easing in Bremen.

Hamburg: The city-state of Hamburg had one of the strictest corona rules in Germany, there was even a curfew from 9 p.m. This is canceled Tuesday on Wednesday due to a stable incidence below 100, but there are still many restrictions. Private gatherings are limited to one household plus one additional person. The zoo has reopened.

Hessen: The federal emergency brake applies almost everywhere in Hessen. A stable incidence below 100 has only been achieved in three districts: Wetteraukreis, Hochtaunuskreis and Vogelsbergkreis. A maximum of five people from two households are allowed to come together in these three districts, and there is no curfew. Zoos, museums and memorials are partially open. Attention to all party-goers: alcohol consumption is prohibited in some public places.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Since May 5th, day tourists have been welcome again in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania – but only those who have already been fully vaccinated. A Father’s Day excursion with children to the Baltic Sea is initially only possible for the local population. The outdoor catering is still closed, outdoor areas of zoos and animal parks can also receive guests. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a household (even couples living apart count as one household) can meet with another person.

Lower Saxony: The federal emergency brake applies in the urban districts of Delmenhorst, Salzgitter, Wolfsburg, Osnabrück and Emden as well as in the districts of Gifhorn, Hanover region, Nienburg (Weser), Wolfenbüttel, Vechta, Lüchow-Dannenberg, Peine, Norheim, Diepholz, Cloppenburg and the county of Bentheim. A household can meet another person here. In most other regions, a household can meet with a maximum of two other people from one household. Exceptions apply in the Wittmund district and Wilhelmshaven. Because the incidences there are below 35, up to ten people from three households are allowed to meet here. Outside catering is open in regions where the emergency brake does not apply. In addition, tourism for people from Lower Saxony is also allowed in Lower Saxony, all hotels in areas where the federal emergency brake does not apply are allowed to open.

North Rhine-Westphalia: In the most populous federal state, the federal emergency brake applies almost everywhere. There are exceptions in three model regions: In Soest and Lippstadt, cafes and restaurants again opened their outdoor areas in a specified area in the city center this Wednesday. Another model project is already running in the Coesfeld district, for example an outdoor swimming pool has opened here. A maximum of five people from two households are allowed to meet in these three regions. Zoos and some museums are open.

Rhineland-Palatinate: In Rhineland-Palatinate, outdoor catering is open subject to hygiene requirements, and zoos and museums also receive guests. Meetings are allowed between two households with a maximum of five people. Exceptions apply in rural districts and urban districts that have exceeded the 100 incidence. These are the districts of Altenkirchen, Bad Kreuznach, Bad Kreuznach and Westerwaldkreis as well as the independent cities of Kaiserslautern, Mainz, Pirmasens, Worms, Speyer, Ludwigshafen and Landau in the Palatinate.

Saarland: Just in time for Ascension Day, the first two districts are released from the emergency brake: Merzig-Wadern and St. Wendel. Up to ten people can meet here outdoors if they have a daily negative Corona test. The outdoor catering can reopen in both counties for those who tested negative.

Saxony: In principle, hiking and running are allowed – even with handcarts. Alcohol in public is no longer prohibited. In the case of those who have not been vaccinated, only one household is allowed to meet with one other person on the ascension excursion. The authorities urge those who have recovered and who have been vaccinated to carry proof of their own, as there are no contact restrictions for them.

Saxony-Anhalt: There is currently no federal emergency brake in Magdeburg, all other 13 urban and rural districts have an incidence of over 100. In Magdeburg, a household with a maximum of five people from another household may meet. Outside catering is only open in Magdeburg (with a negative Corona test) – everyone else has to buy bratwurst and Co. and eat them elsewhere.

Schleswig-Holstein: The outdoor catering has opened in large parts of Schleswig-Holstein, a table reservation is required for this. Museums, libraries, botanical gardens, zoos, aquariums and beach chair rentals are back in operation. A maximum of five people from two households are allowed to come together. There is one exception, however: the emergency brake is still active in the Neumünster district.

Thuringia: In Thuringia, the federal emergency brake applies on Father’s Day in all urban and rural districts. Tourist offers and outdoor catering are not yet allowed to open, but some excursion restaurants offer bratwurst, ice cream and beer on hand. In some regions there is a ban on consuming alcoholic beverages in public.
