There has been chaos in Libya for years. Switzerland has no diplomatic representation there since 2014. We strongly advise against traveling to the country where Muammar al-Ghadhafi once ruled. And yet: Something seems to work pretty well there – the trade in discarded and broken cars.
According to official figures from the Federal Customs Administration, Libya is the top destination for end-of-life vehicles from Switzerland. Last year alone, the record number of exactly 32,369 cars reached the country torn by civil war. Libya is thus by far the most important export country for used and accident cars from Switzerland – to put it less nicely, the Maghreb state could also be described as the largest junkyard in Switzerland.
