In 1857, a competition was launched to find the architects responsible for the development of the future park in Manhattan. The two landscape architects, Frederic Law Olmsted and Clavert Vaux, win it. Andrew Haswell Green, chairman of the park commission from 1857 to 1871, played an important role: in 1858, he bought an additional 26 hectares to extend the park north of the city, up to the 110e rue.
