WhatsApp withdraws privacy policy measures

29 may 2021 – 06:05

WhatsApp’s widely criticized privacy policy appears to have turned out to be a major failure: parent Facebook has decided not to curtail users who do not agree to the new privacy terms.

In a statement to The Verge A spokesperson said the company has decided not to restrict the app’s functionality to people who don’t accept the new privacy policy after “talking with authorities and privacy experts.”

WhatsApp’s new privacy policy, under which the app’s data would be shared with other Facebook services, came into effect on May 15. The company had said those who did not agree to the new terms would lose access to some WhatsApp features, such as the ability to access the chat list or audio and video calls. This not only angered some users, but also sparked outrage from governments.

Sharing information requires the explicit consent of users. If there isn’t one, the company isn’t allowed to share data.

Incidentally, a majority would have agreed, Facebook says. The conditions do not apply in Europe. In any case, data should not be shared there.
