This changes in the new beta introduced by WhatsApp in the last few hours, detected by WABetaInfo. This new function is a group icon editor which allows the user do not have to leave the gray icon blank. This editor allows you to change the background color and enter emojis. There is also a section that allows you to add stickers instead of emojis. This will give a lively touch to group icons that don’t have a custom image.

If you have the beta version of WhatsApp on iOS, you can check if the feature is enabled by clicking on the camera icon in the group image. If you have it, a new option called ‘Emoji & Stickers’ will appear with which you can activate the editor and color the group image.
