No less than 5x a rating as a troll or insult, while we as a species on this planet would be wise to try to limit our production and waste mountain and emissions very critically with the highest priority.

In the 90s you couldn’t run the latest games properly on 2 year old hardware, that’s how fast the developments went. The developments went so fast in the desktop area: a 486DX-II with a 3dfx voodoo could not be compared to a 386 at 16mhz without graka from shortly before. One could play quake, the other just drew lemmings and norton commander.

The smartphone market is beginning to mature and just about every phone can surf, multitask, smoothly play HD video, record, stream, conferencing, reasonable camera, record hours for hours on end, etc. Now it is definitely time to look at sustainability. We cannot continue as the whole world, with all the upcoming economies, by having a brand new smartphone manufactured every 3 years, all of us 7 billion. That is untenable.

So I understand that my super fast 5 year old Samsung S7 is EOL, but the next generations really belong to a mature product and should just be able to last with a lifespan comparable to laptops and PCs, that is, until you can reasonably assume that the hardware just isn’t enough anymore.

In 2021 no one wants to sit down on a pentium 3 – 800mhz with a 15 ” crt monitor and a ball mouse anymore via dial-up. I get that. But smartphones are currently being disastrously quickly rejected. That’s some idiocy that has to stop asap. It really doesn’t have to be ‘forever’, and we don’t live under that illusion, but 10 years seems very reasonable to me for new smartphones from now on.
