Lars Thomsen researches which trends will shape the future in the next ten years. In the interview, he reveals what interests him most about 2121.
BZ: Mr. Thomsen, what are you most interested in with regard to 2121?
Thomsen: Whether we have converted life on our planet to a sustainable circular economy by then in such a way that we can cope with the resources that are available to us and we humans can lead a fulfilling life.
BZ: It is certainly impossible to predict what life will be like in 100 years. In which area is this most likely?
Thomsen: The easiest way to deduce is that we will not be able to deal with finite resources – let’s take crude oil or fossil fuels – for another 100 years as we have before. In 100 years we will generate almost all energy from solar energy. We will also continue to be automated. At the same time, we will continue to be empathetic, social people who strive to live a life worth living and to connect with other people. I don’t think we’ll end up in a science fiction scenario where we’re just the power sources for computers.
BZ: That’s reassuring to hear. Where can you speculate too?
