Denmark’s royal family will move to Washington in late summer. Prince Joachim will take up a new position there on September 1, 2023. There should be many new things to discover for his youngest children, Countess Athena and Count Henrik.

In a few months, Prince Joachim, 53, Princess Marie, 47, and their children, Countess Athena, 11, and Count Henrik, 13, will be moving from Paris to Washington. For the offspring of the royal couple, this means that they have to say goodbye to their friends in Paris. Added to this is the adjustment to a new school. Not an easy time for the mini royals from Denmark. As the magazine “Billed-Bladet” suspects, however, her parents will keep an eye on the well-being of their two youngest children in addition to the practical questions.

Countess Athena and Count Henrik have already shown a sense of adventure in Paris

In the meantime, the two have practiced adjusting to new situations and a new country. In 2019, Athena and Henrik moved from Denmark to Paris with their parents. A short time later, in an interview with the Danish tabloid magazine “BT”, Marie, of French origin, proudly reported that her children like to speak French and that they like the city. “Of course they miss their friends in Denmark, but there are many children from different countries here, which is exciting,” she said at the time.

In November 2022, however, Joachim surprisingly announced that the family would be leaving their beloved temporary home this year. “It’s fantastic work but it ends this summer,” he told Billed Bladet. After military training at the “École Militaire”, Queen Margrethe’s youngest son, 82, took up a position as a defense attaché at the Danish embassy in September 2020, and a month later Marie took up a position as a special representative in the cultural department of the Danish embassy.

Now, however, the couple is reorienting themselves. “Her Royal Highnesses Prince Joachim and Princess Marie move to Washington DC On September 1, 2023, His Royal Highness Prince Joachim will take up a new position in the Ministry of Defense as the Defense Industry Attaché at the Danish Embassy in Washington DC, where the Prince will reside for years to come as Denmark’s representative will contribute to strengthening defense industry cooperation with the United States and Canada,” the palace said in an official statement on Instagram on March 17, 2023.

School offer in Washington is promising

In the meantime, Joachim and Marie are probably already on the lookout for a suitable school for their youngest. There is a large selection of international educational institutions in the new city. For example, the Rochambeau School, an international French school, in Washington, or a private French international school in Montgomery County, Maryland, near the American capital, could be considered. The British International School of Washington or Washington International School are other options for Athena and Henrik.

The Danish mini royals will not lack educational opportunities. And exciting adventures away from the classroom are inevitable anyway.
