What is the dosage of amoxicillin for adults and children?

KOMPAS.com – Amoxicillin is a penicillin class of antibiotics used to fight various types of bacterial infections, including Streptococcus spp. b-lactomase-negative strain, S. pneumoniae Staphylococcus spp. which do not produce penicillinases, H. influenzae, Helicobacter pylori and E. coli.

Doctors usually prescribe this drug if you have a bacterial disease, such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, urinary tract infection or UTI, pneumonia, acute rhinosinusitis caused by bacteria, and skin infections caused by bacteria.

Both adults, children or teenagers can use amoxicillin when prescribed by a doctor. However, keep in mind that this medication should be taken as directed by your doctor, including dosage and the time between doses.

If you forget to take amoxicillin at the recommended time, drink it immediately when you remember, unless it’s close to your next dose. Do not take more than one dose of amoxicillin at a time.

As for the number of doses, the doctor will determine it according to the patient’s weight, age and disease. Here are the general estimates:

1. Bacterial infection

  • Children, adolescents and adults weighing 40 kilograms or more: 250-500 milligrams (mg) for 8 hours or 500-875 mg for 12 hours.
  • Children older than three months and weighing less than 40 kilograms: 20-40 mg per kilogram of body weight per day (kg/day) divided every eight hours or 25-40 mg/kg/day divided by 12 hours.
  • Children three years of age and younger: 30 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours.

2. Gonorrhea infection

  • Children, adolescents and adults weighing 40 kilograms or more: 3 grams orally in one dose
  • Children older than three months and weighing less than 40 kg: 50 mg/kg/day in combination with 25 mg probenecid/kg/day orally in one dose.
  • For children three years of age and younger: Not recommended.

3. For H. pylori infection

There are two treatment options for adults, namely double therapy and triple therapy.

  • Dual therapy involves 1 gram of amoxicillin every eight hours for 14 days in combination with lansoprazole.
  • Meanwhile, triple therapy is 1 gram of amoxicillin every 12 hours for 14 days, combined with 500 mg of clarithromycin and 30 mg of lansoprazole.

For children, the use and dosage should first be consulted with a doctor.
