Trying out what everything will start and then drive the old diesel is a favorite pastime of many “beta testers” with the old “piano”, or Mercedes W123 / 200D in the garage. Yes, we acknowledge, the engine in this model is really a prototype of a unit into which basically anything can be poured, what has a flash point (here rather a “flash”), and it really will eventually work. But we tried something a little better. This video will entertain you.
A diesel classic is a prerequisite
Testers from the Garage 54 project chose an old Toyota Townace van as a model vehicle. Which has more in common with the Mercedes W123 described above than it might seem. Classic and simple diesel, with rotary pump and without turbo. For a modern common rail, similar experiments would survive for several tens of seconds before all the lights came on. And you would lose all your savings in replacement or cleaning in the same second.

Purified kerosene came first. The engine worked on him without any problems, which was to be expected. The only difference was the slightly different sound of the engine. And the question, of course, remains what would happen with long-term use. This was followed by the idol of all the green proponents of the internal combustion engine and the subject of the introductory photo of this article: sunflower oil. After the current rise in price, all its economic advantage is trapped, but it was worth a try.
Ecological fuel more than promising
The product of the sun, soil and photosynthesis was actually quieter than kerosene. The odor emanating from the exhaust was not unlike the abrasion floating around an unnamed fast food. At least you know what you eat. For the first time, it was necessary to start on kerosene and then “switch” to oil, but the engine got used to the oil so much that it eventually started on it as well.

The oil was followed by the well-known and popular “omniscient” WD40, respectively its cheaper variant. The operation would not make much sense for the original. Although the engine managed to start, it did not last long. It seems that despite their universal capabilities, the WD will not be 40 and similar preparations too functional alternative to diesel. With transmission oil it turned out similarly, the engine could be started, but it had a very non-standard sound, not to mention clouds of smoke from the exhaust. EU7 probably wouldn’t pass here. Nevertheless, the car was able to start and drive on its own.
Next was the brake fluid, which at first glance is an absurd “fuel”, however, the engine actually had no problem with it, the car drove quietly and completely stopped smoking. That an ecological perpetuum mobile? Finally, the Garage 54 experimenters kept the liquid to cut off the screws. The engine started again and drove again without any problems. So there is no doubt that combining your own restaurant with a lot of fried food and old diesel as a “business” car will work.
