What is a Solar Storm and how long does it take to reach Earth?

If suddenly your phone stops working, the internet network is slow or your TV signal is faulty, probably not the classic bad service that many companies give, but a solar storm that will hit planet Earth these days.

Since August 19, information began to circulate that could bring a catastrophe a Solar storm, the truth is that the National Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), an agency of the United States Department of Commerce indicated that it is a G1 level energy ejection, the lowest in this type of phenomenon.

So not much to worry about, but many people still do not know for sure what a Solar Storm is and what consequences it could derive.

What is a solar storm?

It is an explosion of plasma clouds (state of matter) produced by the sun, this plasma contains energetic particles such as protons and electrons that explode and are known as coronal mass ejections.

A solar storm is also called geomagnetic storm. In more precise words, it would be something similar to a solar wind wave with radiation, which emerges from the solar corona or the circle that surrounds the energy concentrated in the sun.

There are three stages of a Solar Storm:

  • Solar Eruptions: In this first stage, ultraviolet light and x-rays can generate interference in radio communications, due to the intense load with which they reach the Earth.
  • Radiation storm: It is a discharge of radioactive energy, which can damage an astronaut who is on a space mission. For beings on Earth, it would not become harmful due to the layers that surround the planet.
  • Coronal mass ejection: It is a cloud of charged particles, these take a few days to reach the planet.

How long does it take to reach Earth?

There are various calculations for the energy of a solar storm to impact the earth, but it would take around 24 hours or even days, from its emission in the sun to reaching the stratosphere of planet Earth.

Why is a Solar Storm dangerous?

Although it is not known with certainty what the real damage of a solar storm is in humans (cerebrovascular problems have been reported in some patients), what is certain is that it damages the telecommunications system and electrical networks of various regions.

In addition, we move in a world full of technology. If the energy released by the Solar storm were too intense, many of the digital services that we have would stop working. It would be a tragedy!

A Solar Storm would cause the Northern Lights!

There is a record that in 1859 there was a solar storm of great magnitude, which caused northern lights in Honolulu and Cuba, and southern auroras in Santiago de Chile.

The intensity of the light was such that they could read a book or hold a meeting without the need for artificial light. Amazing!

Have you had problems with your communication systems? Has your mobile failed? Now you know the reasons.
