What does the inter-degree MuE project set up by Shakers in six classrooms in the Montluçon (Allier) agglomeration consist of?

At a time when museums and places of culture can no longer welcome visitors, the Shakers association continues to bring art to the public, especially the youngest, in Montluçon (Allier) and in its region. agglomeration.

A project to bring together several levels around art

With Laure Barillé and Ylva Fowler, two artists in residence since November, the association has set up the inter-degree MuE project. As part of the Artistic and Cultural Education Course (PEAC) supported by the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC), the project affects six classes of CM2, 6th, 4th and second in Montluçon and Domérat.

“At the beginning, we wanted to mix you up to create a work collectively, but it was not possible because of the Covid”, explained the artists to the students of the second option plastic arts.

The MuE project, which was to start in November with the start of the Montluçonnaise residency of Laure Barillé and Ylva Fowler, was also postponed to the end of February because of the epidemic.

Ylva Fowler (standing) provided technical support to the students who were free in their creations.

Creations on the theme of dreams

This did not prevent the two Breton artists from leading the students to a theme that is dear to them, that of dreams. Laure Barillé and Ylva Fowler in fact form the TPAR duo in the Universe (TPAR meaning Anything Can A Dream).

The objective of this inter-degree project is to create a monument to dreams which will be made up of all the creations of schoolchildren, middle school and high school students. They make clay talismans responsible for protecting what they hold most dear or most secret.

In Montluçon, Shakers is a breeding ground for young talents

Listening to your emotions and feeling the material

To be able to create around their dreams, the two artists teach children and adolescents to listen to their emotions and to the material. “Emotions are deceptively simple. It’s easy to identify and difficult to share, but they are useful for sharing ideas, ”slips Ylva Fowler to guide a group of seconds from Madame-de-Staël high school. The pupils are totally free in their creations, as the artist reminds us.

You create a talisman that protects something magical. You do what you want. We couldn’t be disappointed. It’s up to you to let go. You all have plastic qualities. We are not here to give you a price

What counts for the two artists is only that the pupils follow the technical instructions so that the piece does not explode during firing.

The students worked with a subject that they knew little about.

Students discover working with clay

For these students in optional plastic arts, the workshop is a discovery in several ways and first of all with the material. The clay used for the Shakers MuE project was provided by the Tuilerie de Doyet. The practice of this subject is indeed new for them because clay has a cost that most schools cannot afford.

So, when Laure Barillé and Yvla Fowler ask them to close their eyes to discover by touch the material that they pose in front of them, the reactions are diverse. Some students hardly dare to put their hands on the clay, touching it with their fingertips between apprehension and disgust, others knead it with full palms, some caress the material with delicacy …

The attitudes are different. It’s like with charcoal: some hate it, others love it

Damien Sinet (visual arts teacher at Madame-de-Staël high school)

These former high school students from Madame-de-Staël, in Montluçon, became actors

Laure Barillé (standing) regretted that the Covid epidemic did not allow the different classes to be brought together when creating the talismans.
Another approach to plastic art thanks to artists

For the teacher, participation in this project is very enriching for the students.

The relationship is not the same with artists. This allows you to cut and see something else. In addition to high school, the subject is open. We ask them to have their personal universe and some stay on a favorite technique. With these workshops, they discover another technique and are in a collective creation

The pieces will be fired in the Beaux-Arts oven in Limoges.
A monument to dreams to come

The workshops will continue in partner establishments until March 12. The 150 pieces produced will be fired at the Beaux-Arts in Limoges. Traveling exhibitions in the establishments are planned before the monument to dreams can be installed in a place that remains to be defined in Montluçon.
