President Donald Trump fired State Department inspector general Steve Linick on Friday. This is the latest in a series of dismissals of independent government monitors that occurred following the President’s acquittal in the impeachment which took place earlier this year. “It is vital that you have the utmost confidence in the appointees who serve as inspectors general. That is no longer the case with respect to this inspector general, “Trump said in a letter sent to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi. The letter states that the dismissal is effective in 30 days. Politico first reported the dismissal. Not long after the decision was announced, the chairman of the House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee said Linick had opened an investigation into Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
