Things are not looking very good for WhatsApp Groups. A group of developers reported that, when analyzing the APK of the new version of WhatsApp beta, the name of a new function titled “Communities” appears, and everything indicates that it will bring great changes for the famous WhatsApp groups.

Analyzing the code of the new version of WhatsApp, the developers of the XDA portal identified the possible new function. According to the analysis of the specialists, these communities could offer a functionality similar to social networks, allowing users to connect with people on a larger scale than what is allowed by WhatsApp groups.

If so, WhatsApp would be taking a big step towards the format of social networks like Facebook, which thanks to its Pages also allow a large number of users to connect. The company could also be looking to position itself against its competition, considering that Telegram already has a similar function called “Channels”.

Information about the “Communities” feature is still speculation, as the Facebook-owned company did not confirm or deny such development. In its report, the portal also raised the possibility that the application is only introducing a new name for WhatsApp groups. On the other hand, the Communities function could come to complement the already existing groups.

The report suggests that WhatsApp Groups, popularized in 2017 with the expansion of its maximum capacity to 256 people, would become simply a better way for users to organize groups, allowing group conversations to be created “within” the new communities.

XDA added that having the groups within the newly discovered Community role could mean that the creators of a group (or creators of a community) could assign new roles to the users, such as “community administrators”, while getting better control over groups.

This means that while WhatsApp may also simply rename its Groups role to Community, we will only know what the capabilities of the role are after the company works on the role in future versions of the app. As with many beta features in all apps, the feature may eventually be scrapped due to its feasibility.

For now, the feature joins the list of multiple updates WhatsApp is currently working on and testing in the beta version of its application, such as reactions and the ability to pause an audio while it is being recorded.
