On the 18th/19th June 2022 took place at the University of Rostock the final tournament of the German university championships for women. The Cologne competition community was able to successfully defend its title in this final round.
The squad
The competition community (WG) Cologne consisted of players from DSHS Cologne and the University of Cologne. The core of the team consisted of players from the second division team of DSHS SnowTrex Köln (Franziska Kalde, Kirsten Tälkers, Leonie Wienkamper, Maike BronhorstViola Torliene).
But it was far from pure SnowTrex Team, but the team also found support in two players from the runners-up 2. Bundesliga Nord TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen Clara Wübbeke and Klara Single (next season Libera in the 1st league at VC Neuwied 77).
Still came Lene Stegelmann and Jana Grathwol of the Second representation of FC Junkersdorf for use, as well as Sarah Wollschläger from VTV Free reason.
The ten-man squad was led by Jimmy Czimek as a coach.
The preliminary round
Six teams took part in the final round. The semi-finalists were determined in a preliminary round by playing in two groups. WG Köln played the first game in Group 2 against the University of Würzburg. Cologne was able to clearly win this encounter 2:0 and was thus already qualified for the semi-finals.
In the second group game, WG Köln was beaten by the University of Münster 0:2, with the 2nd set being narrowly lost.

After the first day of the tournament, the obligatory Player’s Party took place in the evening. Here, too, the WG Cologne showed itself from its best side and claimed the unofficial title of party champion, which, according to the old law, often also became university champion.
The final day
On the second day of the tournament for the finals, the WG Köln had to prove that this law really works. In the semifinals, the women from Cologne faced WG Munich. The women from Cologne won this semi-final game 2-0 and thus entered the final of the DHM.
Opponent in the final was again the University of Münster, which was defeated in the group phase. In the final, however, WG Köln showed no weaknesses and returned the favor with a clear 3:0 victory.
With this final victory, WG Köln successfully defended its title. The most recent university championship was in 2019. Due to the pandemic, the HSM could not be held for two years.
The Trainers Statement
Jimmy Czimek found words of praise for his team: “Under conditions that were not exactly easy, namely with numerous middle blockers who had to switch to other positions, we showed a great team performance, found each other better and better as a team during the course of the tournament and then finally one too won a clear win that the girls can be proud of.”
