They are first and foremost the result of a conviction: accepting the re-appointment – after Napolitano’s encore – would mean for Mattarella to give rise to a practice. And this would jeopardize the “freedom” of the presidents of the Republic, who in the future could move perhaps guided by the idea of another seven years.
