Bremen, after 40 years only second division? Henning Scherf countered the somber thought with a dash of confidence: “After the first descent in 1980, things went up again in no time. Werder had Otto and became a Bayern hunter. I still remember how happy I was that there was finally competition for Bayern again. ”When Werder was relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time, Scherf was Senator for Social Affairs, then responsible for sport in the Hanseatic city:“ The fans were angry with me and said, as a sports senator, I should have prevented the relegation. ”Scherf laughs and sighs:“ We still dream of Otto today, ”he says and of course means Rehhagel. The journey through time with the former mayor of Bremen is less nostalgic than much more today. Scherf did not understand that Max Kruse was let go this season: “There was no adequate successor, then Füllkrug got injured.” And something else troubles him. The SPD, Bremen, Werder, no sheet of paper fit in between for decades. Willi Lemke, Thomas Schaaf, Marco Bode, Klaus-Dieter Fischer: These are all dear friends, says Scherf. Most recently, however, the relationship between Werders and the town hall was burdened – keyword police costs. Scherf says: “That changed the climate a lot. It was different back then.
