Weather: hail, heavy rains, floods, Belgium hit by violent storms (video)

The Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) launched a thunderstorm warning across the country from Thursday evening, and until Friday midnight.

Une fifty interventions took place in the context of flooding that occurred Thursday afternoon in the Wavre region, we learned from the Walloon Brabant relief zone.

Heavy rains fell in the Wavrian region, causing numerous flooding of roads and some falls of trees and branches. Shortly before 5:30 p.m., around fifty calls for help had been recorded at the Brabant fire station.

Besides Wavre, the municipalities of Mont-Saint-Guibert, Ottignies and Louvain-la-Neuve were affected by flooding. The Liège region is also affected by thunderstorms.

“This evening, the development of intense showers and thunderstorms is confirmed, which may be accompanied by hail and strong gales. The exact location remains difficult to predict but this risk is widespread, ”warned the MRI earlier in the day.

Under these thunderstorms, heavy precipitation is expected, which can lead to accumulations of 10 to 30 liters per cubic meter in one hour of time. However, a few poorly mobile storm cells could lead to even more marked precipitation, mainly in the west and north of the country (amount of the order of 40 liters per cubic meter or more). This is a borderline situation between the yellow and orange thresholds, which explains the variation in colors between the provinces (which could still change).

Thus, the orange threshold is valid for West Flanders, East Flanders, Antwerp, Limburg, Flemish Brabant, Brussels and Walloon Brabant, warns the meteorological center.

The region of Mouscron was also affected Thursday evening by violent thunderstorms from France. Heavy precipitation reached the region within moments.
