Wearable: Corona virus sensor on the neck detects symptoms

Northwestern University and the Shirley Ryan Abilitylab have developed a wearable and the associated software that are used to monitor corona patients and detect worsening symptoms early. The device records the type, duration and time of the cough and is applied like a plaster. It is completely wrapped in silicone and can therefore be disinfected easily. The adhesive sensor is applied where the neck and chest meet.

By analyzing the data, the scientists hope to be able to monitor early signs of a coronavirus infection and the progression of the disease. The data is transferred to the cloud via an iOS device when it is charged and evaluated there, the researchers write.

The sensor patch was previously used to monitor stroke patients, but is now said to collect data on coughing and breathing difficulties. The patch also records heart rate and temperature. However, a sensor for monitoring oxygen saturation in the blood is missing.

Professor John Rogers, director of the Center for Biointegrated Electronics at Northwestern University, told Cnet that the sensor does not use a microphone, but a three-axis accelerometer to measure the movement of the skin’s surface.

So far, 25 test persons have used the device for two weeks each. However, it is still too early for the mass production of the sensor patch. First of all, the AI should be trained to recognize relevant patterns.

“We expect the algorithms we are developing to extract Covid-like signs and symptoms from the raw data and symptoms before the individual can perceive them.”said Arun Jayaraman, a researcher at Shirley Ryan Abilitylab who leads algorithm development. “These sensors have the potential to provide information that protects frontline medical staff and patients alike.”
