Hamburg (dpa / lno) – The Hamburg Towers succeeded in a big surprise in the basketball league. The team of coach Pedro Calles won on Sunday at the front runner Telekom Baskets Bonn with 92:80 (52:38). The Hanseatics, who had previously lost to Alba Berlin and Brose Bamberg, were missing the injured Jaylon Brown and Justus Hollatz. The best thrower was Caleb Homesley with 33 points.

The towers were clearly improved compared to the previous appearances. From the middle of the first quarter the guests were able to pull away and kept the favorites at a distance until the break. This was partly due to their own quota of three (8/21), but also to the free throws. The Towers were allowed to come to the line 14 times (10 points), Bonn only had two attempts (2 points).

Even after the break, the towers remained focused and even managed to take a 21-point lead. The game was not yet decided. Bonn fought their way up to 70:80 around five minutes before the end, but Homesley countered the race to catch up with two threesomes. After that, Hamburg couldn’t take the victory away.
