Protests in New York

The New York protests left several people injured and 72 arrested. The mayor promised a “full review of events”.

  • An African American died in a police operation in the United States.
  • The scene was captured on video.
  • Since then, thousands have demonstrated against police violence.

After the death of African American George Floyd in a brutal police operation, several thousand people protested against racism in New York. During the night of Saturday there were riots in the Manhattan and Brooklyn districts. According to CNN, the police arrested at least 72 people. There are said to have been injuries on both sides.

Many demonstrators carried posters that said “I can’t breathe”. Those were the words Floyd said to the police officers who knelt on him during the arrest in the city of Minneapolis shortly before his death. It was the second night in a row that protests had taken place in New York.

Mayor Bill de Blasio wrote on Twitter late Friday evening that it was about “de-escalating this situation and taking people home safely”. He promised a “complete review of events” and added: “We never want to experience such a night again.” In other US cities, there were sometimes violent protests at night on Saturday.
