Several scenes of excitement were documentary – with all the consequences that followed

The condition of the Ābelļi brothers when creating the feature film was to create real, scene-appropriate conditions that could be documented so that the actors could feel so much in the image that they would forget the tension of the filming area.

Sometimes it worked better than expected. For example, in the nightlife scenes of the film, the behavior of the actors at times became uncontrollable: in the heat of the dance, the film technique was solid or the actors openly allowed themselves to love. In another episode, the fights staged were kept real and the actors got involved in the fight.

This documentary-staged artistic approach to filming united the team, because the result captured in the camera was true and therefore strong.

Friendship with shamans is born in Norway, but a driver is fishing for dinner

Part of the film’s story takes place in Norway behind the Arctic Circle, where the film’s protagonist Roberts goes in search of his missing brother Mārtiņš. After exploring possible filming locations, the filmmakers met and persuaded local Sami shamans to take part in the film.

In order to fit into the film’s budget, while not giving up filming in expensive Norway, the team came up with clever techniques: they went on a trip with a car trailer, taking a cook from Latvia with them. From time to time, the driver Normunds caught fish in the fjords, which were used during the day as props in movie scenes, and in the evening – on the table.

The director does not include the most elegant scenes in the film

A helicopter was rented for the film’s grande finale *, where it was planned to elegantly transport the film’s characters – art patrons and business people. The shots succeeded as intended, but the editing director Armands Začs convinced the Ābele brothers in the course of his work that this picture is not significant and falls out of the overall concept. Cutting an expensive frame out of a film was a difficult decision, but it proved the ancient truth that one film is made in a script, another is made while filming, and a third is in the editing process.

To get a feel for the image, the actor spends the day in a black cube box at an abandoned ship repair yard

The central symbol of the film is a black cube, which for many is associated with the traditions of the occult. In the story of the film, one of its main characters – Mārtiņš (actor Mārcis Lācis) – inside a black cube, in darkness and isolation, spends 7 days. To get into the role, the actor chose to spend 24 hours alone inside the cube.

Marcis Lācis perceived the task of joining the black cube alone with a certain sense of exaltation – as a big event. The cube was located in an old and abandoned tsarist ship repair shop in Liepaja. A storm began at night: pieces of brick and glass fell from the ceiling of the old factory. They made the experience of solitude quite dramatic: absolute darkness, howling wind and the noise of melting glass all around. Asked if the actor would be willing to repeat this experience, he answers convincingly: “Yes, anytime!”.
