Washington and its allies are debating how to get around legal barriers to using frozen Russian assets, as Russia must pay for Ukraine’s reconstruction. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said this in an interview with CNN.
“This is the responsibility that the world community expects Russia to bear. We are discussing this with our partners, but there are our own legal restrictions on what we can do with the frozen Russian assets,” Yellen said.
As reported on April 16 RIA NovostiThe United States, according to her, has already begun to transfer capital confiscated from Russian private individuals to Kyiv, but so far they cannot dispose of state assets frozen in the West in this way.
As previously reported EADaily, after the start of the special military operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, the West imposed a number of sanctions against Russia, in particular, the assets of 21.5 billion euros belonging to individuals and organizations were frozen. Official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova called the freezing of Russian assets in Europe theft.
