– There is a lot of winter waiting – at least north. There will be great contrasts between the weather in the north and the south. It is already quite cold in the north, but it will be even colder in the future. It will be a cold and wintry week in the north with snow, says state meteorologist Terje Alsvik Walløe to Dagbladet.
Despite milder weather further south in Norway, one should not ignore the fact that white precipitation falls:
– Here in the south it is fine now, but there will be precipitation on Tuesday. Before the mild air arrives, there may be white precipitation in the interior – and it will be exciting to see where the line between snow and rain goes. It can be white in the inner Inland, with sleet and snow before the mild air comes on Wednesday. It can be challenging in the hinterland and southern Norway, he says.
Clear advice
Snow has fallen on mountain passes in several places in the country this weekend. The meteorologist advises switching to winter tires if you are traveling on mountain passes and in northern Norway.
– In the north, you absolutely must have winter tires because it will be a wintry week with minus degrees. It is wintery in many places in northern Norway, and to the south it is especially Tuesday that can present problems in the Inland and Eastern Norway. In the mountains in the south, it can turn white on Tuesday, he says.
Snow can also fall in Tromsø city on Tuesday.
– The boundary between snow and rain will be lower on Monday. In Tromsø city, there is probably a danger of snow showers at the beginning of Monday. There is a cold north wind blowing downwards, so there may be sleet and snow showers in Troms and Finnmark.
On Sunday, the Meteorological Institute issued a yellow warning for snowdrifts, and warned that the combination of strong northerly winds and fresh snow will give local snowdrifts over 200-400 meters in North Troms and Finnmark.
– It can be difficult driving conditions – use the right tires and drive according to the conditions, is the call from the meteorologists.

Early winter
Thursday was the first winter day of the year. At least according to the prime minister, the Meteorological Institute tweeted. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute defines winter in that the average temperature throughout the day is below zero degrees.
Winter comes early this year, he believes Alsvik Walløe.
– It will be colder this week than usual. In Finnmark it will be minus degrees all week, and it can be colder than 10 degrees below zero until Wednesday, he says.
– How unusual is it with this cold?
– It happens sometimes, but it is not every year that the temperature is so low. It’s colder than usual. It is not a record, but it is noticeably colder than what is typical for this time of year, he says.
The meteorologist has clear advice for those who are going to travel on mountain passes and in northern Norway on Tuesday:
– It can be good to follow the weather and driving conditions before driving in the mountains. There are good conditions on Sunday and Monday, but from Tuesday onwards the weather will be changeable, says Alsvik Walløe.
