According to information from residents of the hotel, which was temporarily used as asylum accommodation, a social worker turned to the employees there on Thursday. The BBC also reported that the perpetrator had announced the attack.
The man had injured six people with a knife on Friday before the police shot him. According to the media, it was a man from Sudan who was accommodated in the hotel himself. The police quickly excluded a terrorist background. There is evidence that the man had mental health problems. He was reported to have noticed complaints about noise. Scottish police chief Iain Livingstone warned of speculation before the facts of the crime were cleared up.
Among the injured were three other residents of the hotel, two employees and a police officer. All are still in hospital treatment, but in stable condition, the police said on Saturday. The 42-year-old policeman and another person had been seriously injured in the attack.
