On Wednesday, the Reuters news agency went with the Israeli army (IDF) into the ruins after the war in the north of the Gaza Strip.

A doll is left on the bed in the bedroom. The mirror on the wall is broken, as are the windows. The curtains are blown out of the wall.

Lieutenant Colonel Ido in the IDF, who appears only by his first name, stands in the middle of the bedroom wearing full uniform.

A prerequisite for being with the IDF was that they were allowed to review the pictures for Reuters. None of the images were removed after the review, the news agency says – see more here:

The photos were taken on the same day that Israel claims that Hamas has lost control of northern Gaza.

At the same time, the number of Palestinian civilians killed continues to rise: according to Palestinian health authorities, Israel’s attack on the Gaza Strip has so far claimed more than 10,500 lives, including more than 4,300 children.

Five-year-olds are most often represented on the list of those killed, shows VG’s compilation.

Great civil suffering

Israel has asked civilians to evacuate to the southern part of Gaza, but the bombing and fighting continue even though there are still civilians in the central and northern parts of Gaza.

Another photo – also from Wednesday – shows an injured girl at the Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City. Her leg, elbow and hand are bandaged, and she has wounds on her face.

– We are very concerned about Israel’s increasing warfare inside Gaza City and fear that even more civilians will be killed, says Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide (Ap) to VG.

He says that warfare in densely populated areas tightens the requirements to protect civilians.

– The parties to the conflict must implement all practically possible measures to avoid civilians being killed or injured as a result of the fighting, says Barth Eide.

Dreaming of bread

The Sadeq family from Bærum has been imprisoned in Khan Younis in the south of Gaza since the start of the war.

– They ask people to travel south because it should be safe, but they still bomb in the south every single day. What they say is not what we see. The situation is getting worse and more dangerous every day, says Sadeq.

She, her husband Ahmed and daughter Mariam (6) have now been trapped in the war for over a month.

VG has previously written about the family from Bærum, and Mariam who had never been abroad before the family traveled to visit the place her parents fled from.

– We are scared and don’t know what can happen to us, says Sadeq and continues:

– We have none of what you need to live. Our biggest dream is to get bread and water, it’s like a treasure.

Nagham Sadeq says that the family has had no electricity since the first day of the war, and that water only comes once a week.

– It is as if we are living 50 years back in time, she says.

The border crossing closed – again

Around 250 Norwegians are trapped in the Gaza Strip. Half of them are children, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide tells VG that they are working hard to help the Norwegians get out as quickly as possible.

Despite signals from the Norwegian embassy in Cairo, Norwegians were not allowed to cross the border on Wednesday. Rafah border crossing has been closed to all due to an unspecified security circumstance.

Nor does the Ministry of Foreign Affairs know when the 250 Norwegians will be allowed out.

– This is a war zone where the order of those who come out does not seem to follow any clear logic. There is limited capacity at the border, which means that this takes time, crisis manager Kristin Traavik in the Foreign Ministry has told VG.
