Wanda Vázquez does not rule out declaring a curfew in the face of the coronavirus emergency

The Governor of Puerto Rico, Wanda Vázquez Garced, did not rule out activating a curfew after confirming the first positive cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) on the island.

“We have made a claim for people to remain in their homes. If you don’t have to go out, don’t go anywhere. If I see that people take this recommendation lightly, I will take whatever measures I have to take, but I want security for my people ”, the president expressed yesterday in a press conference from La Fortaleza.

The president declared a state of emergency this week before the 17 suspected cases of the disease. He called on all private companies to cancel mass entertainment and sports events. In addition, he asked the citizens to avoid constant exits from their homes to avoid possible contagions.

The shopping malls, however, remain open without limitations. The Caribbean Cinemas company, for its part, reported that it will keep its rooms open, but limiting its capacity to half.

The last time a curfew was activated in Puerto Rico was during the first weeks after Hurricane Maria passed last September 2017.

Also last night, Vázquez Garced ordered the total closure of school activities for a period of 14 days starting Monday, March 16, and recommended that private schools do the same.

Local leagues such as the National Superior Basketball (BSN), the Women’s Professional Volleyball League and the Double A Superior Ball paused their tournaments. Similarly, the concerts scheduled this month for the inauguration of the Coca-Cola Music Hall in the Convention District were postponed due to the spread of the disease worldwide.
