Walloon government also displeased with city toll: “Brussels passes on bill to other regions” | Inland

The Walloon Minister of Economy Willy Borsus (MR) is not satisfied with the Brussels plans to a city toll to enter. “A unilateral démarche that passes the bill on to commuters, SMEs and the self-employed in the other regions. That is doomed to fail,” he said.

By 2022, the Brussels region wants to introduce its own city toll, an important part of the climate plans of the Brussels government. According to ‘De Tijd’, which was able to view documents from the Brussels administration, this tax should yield half a billion euros. For every car entering the capital, a fixed amount would have to be paid, supplemented with an extra rate per kilometer that varies according to the time of day.

Borsus is not happy about that. “It is clear that each region must think about the climate issue, including by providing serious alternatives in terms of mobility. But there can be no question of the financial burden being passed on to the other regions,” he warns. According to Borsus, the toll would have a serious impact on “130,000 Walloons who travel to Brussels every day to work and study”.

“Bullying tax for Flemish”

The MR minister also emphasizes that decisions by a region that have an impact on other regions must in principle be taken through an interregional cooperation agreement. “Then at least there is consultation between the regions.”

Earlier there was also criticism from the Flemish government, through Minister of Finance Matthias Diependaele (N-VA) and Minister of Mobility Lydia Peeters (Open Vld). Among other things, they were talking about one “plague tax for the Flemish”.
