A VW Caddy was hit by a train at the Riedstraße railway crossing in Konstanz on Tuesday evening, October 31st. As police and fire departments agreed upon request, the abandoned car was on the tracks in the Wollmatingen train station area at 7:45 p.m. Despite emergency braking, the Black Forest Railway train driver, who was coming from the direction of Konstanz train station, was unable to prevent the collision. The train only came to a stop 300 meters away.

A video that was distributed on Wednesday via WhatsApp, among others, shows the collision. Seconds before the train rushes up, a man runs along the tracks towards the car caught between the barriers. A young woman screams in horror, the collision throws the Caddy from one side of the street to the other side of the level crossing and then stands completely torn next to the platform in the direction of Singen.

The reason the car was on the rails is unusual. According to the police, the 43-year-old driver, who was coming from the industrial area, noticed an argument in a group of people on the platform and recognized his son. He immediately wanted to rush to his aid – he stopped his car at the railway crossing and apparently rushed to him without thinking too much.

The police estimate the damage at around 70,000 euros, and the VW Caddy was completely destroyed. The locomotive had damage to the front area; A traffic light system was also affected by the collision.

Neither the approximately 80 train passengers nor the train driver or bystanders were injured. According to the Konstanz fire department, a passer-by who was injured regardless of the incident and the accident had to be treated by the emergency services. The passengers were brought back to Konstanz train station in an articulated bus from the municipal utility company.
Since pollutants such as oil and brake fluid from the car had also leaked into the ground, the lower water authority was requested to provide further clarification. The fire department – in addition to the full-time staff, the Wollmatingen and Petershausen departments were on duty – helped to rescue the accident vehicle and then handed the site over to the federal police and the railway emergency manager at around 11 p.m.

The railway line on which the Seehas also runs was temporarily closed. Further repair work is now required in the area of the level crossing and towards the platform; The damaged facilities were cordoned off with red and white tape on Wednesday. However, there were no longer any restrictions on rail traffic and on Riedstrasse due to the accident.
In Konstanz there are always accidents and near collisions at restricted level crossings. Just in July, a cyclist died at the Schneckenburgstrasse level crossing when he tried to cross the rails despite the half-barriers being closed and was hit by a train.
