The emergency department of the VUmc hospital in Amsterdam will close daily from 8 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. from next Monday. There are not enough staff to keep the department open day and night. Patients who need urgent help must divert to the AMC, reports AT5.

There is an exception for patients who are already known to the VUmc. They can still use the emergency room at night. An exception also applies to heart patients.

The staff shortage in the emergency department of the Amsterdam hospital has been an issue for some time. In May, extra staff was sought and employees from other departments had to step in to fill gaps in the roster, according to an e-mail in the hands of AT5. It had already been decided that ambulances would divert to the AMC.

Other hospitals

At the beginning of this year, the Isala hospital in Meppel also had to close the emergency department at night for two months due to a shortage of staff. The Haga Hospital in Zoetermeer – formerly the Langeland Hospital – faced the same problem last year. There, the emergency room was closed three days a week for some time.

The VUmc was already planning to close the doors of the emergency department in May 2024. All help of this category must then take place in the AMC. The VUmc does not say whether the emergency room will still open in the meantime. The VUmc and AMC are both locations of the Amsterdam UMC.
