‘VR glasses to distract pain in more and more hospitals’

The glasses, in which lifelike videos are played, are being used in more and more departments, according to a survey conducted by the AD. The ‘virtual reality’ is used, among other things, for punctures for kidney dialysis, for suturing or pricking, and for example against nerve pain after chemotherapy.

Births

The method is already used for a while, but would therefore gain ground within hospitals. For example, the technique can calm children when visiting the hospital. At the Zuyderland Medical Center in Heerlen, the method is even used for childbirth.

According to the hospitals where the VR glasses are used, patients are satisfied with the treatment. They say they feel more comfort and less pain.

Pain medication

According to anesthesiologists, pain medication can decrease with the help of the glasses. “It will not be the case that the glasses will soon be at the pharmacy, but I am really confident that we will soon be able to use less medication,” says Michel Terheggen, anesthesiologist at the Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem. “Pain medication can have very unpleasant side effects.”
