Volkswagen stops production of petrol cars in Zwickau. Only cars will be produced

Times are changing, Bob Dylan sang, and this also applies to the automotive sector. On the subject of major changes, in fact, after 116 years the Volkswagen Zwickau plant will no longer produce cars with internal combustion engines, to devote himself exclusively to electric cars.

The historical date is that of a few days ago, 26 June 2020, the day on which the last petrol car left the factory. It is, to be precise, a seventh generation Golf with 2.0 engine

In the plans of the German manufacturer, Zwickau will become one of the reference factories in the transition to electricity. The plant will work, at full capacity, on six electric models of Volkswagen, Seat and Audi, producing over 330 thousand electric vehicles per year.

It should be noted that the Zwickau plant is currently engaged in the production of Volkswagen ID.3, but is currently working at a very low rate. After the closure due to the health emergency linked to Coronavirus, in fact, the factory has recently resumed work with about fifty cars produced per day.

As mentioned, the Zwickau plant was opened 116 years ago, with a single interruption of the work due to the Second World War. The factory was originally responsible for the production of Horch cars, then took care of Audi (1910-1940), Trabant (1957-1990) and ended up in the hands of Volkswagen in 1990. More than 9 million cars left the factory .
