Volkswagen: Canada wants 136 million euros because of diesel scandal

In the wake of the diesel scandal, the Canadian public prosecutor’s office has fined the German automaker Volkswagen a fine of 196.5 million Canadian dollars (around 136 million euros) after the company pledged dozens of cases of violating emission standards. This was confirmed by a company spokesman.

Volkswagen was charged in December with importing about 128,000 vehicles into Canada that violated emissions standards. The company was accused of violating the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, among other things, on around 60 charges.

In Canada, VW has faced lawsuits from numerous diesel owners in recent years – the group has already paid more than two billion Canadian dollars (1.36 billion euros) in compensation there. After four years of investigations by the Ministry of the Environment, the government filed a lawsuit.

According to the group, the diesel scandal affects around eleven million cars worldwide in 2015. Because of the “Dieselgate”, the group has already booked more than 30 billion euros in legal costs.
